Liposuction
Liposuction: Body Contouring and Fat Removal Procedure
Liposuction is a procedure where unwanted fat is removed from the body using special surgical instruments. It can be applied to areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, face, buttocks, or back to improve or reshape body contours.
This procedure can also be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgeries, such as breast reduction, tummy tuck, and facelift.
Types of Liposuction and Health Conditions
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that may come with some side effects. Therefore, it is important to be in good health before undergoing surgery. You should meet the following criteria:
- You should be within 30% of your ideal weight.
- Your skin should be firm and elastic.
- You should not smoke.
What Techniques Are Used?
There are various techniques used for liposuction. The common element among all these techniques is the use of a tube called a cannula, connected to a vacuum, to extract fat from the body.
Tumescent Liposuction
This is the most common type of liposuction. The surgeon injects a sterile solution containing saline, lidocaine to relieve pain, and a drug to constrict blood vessels into the treatment area. This mixture helps the area become firm and swollen. The surgeon then makes a small incision and uses a cannula connected to a vacuum to extract the fat.
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
In this method, the surgeon inserts a metal rod that emits ultrasonic energy under the skin. This energy breaks down the fat, making it easier to remove.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)
This technique uses high-intensity laser to break down and remove fat. The laser emulsifies fat deposits, which are then removed with a cannula.
Vaser Liposuction
Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound energy to melt the fat before removing it through a thin tube. This technique is particularly beneficial for areas with dense or larger volumes of fat. It is a less aggressive method and leads to faster recovery. This method is not intended for significant weight loss but for treating fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.
