Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
PRP is a treatment that uses your own blood to stimulate hair growth and strengthen hair follicles. This procedure is quick and cost-effective, involving injections.
Procedure
Your blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the blood cells into layers: platelet-poor plasma, platelet-rich plasma, and red blood cells. The layer of platelet-rich plasma, which contains leukocytes, cytokines, growth factors, and platelets, is drawn into a syringe and injected into the area of hair loss. The entire process takes about 45-50 minutes and needs to be repeated every 4-6 months to maintain the results.
PRP can be applied if the patient already has hair follicles. Patients with severe hair loss or no hair follicles are not ideal candidates for this procedure. The best approach for such patients is to first undergo a hair transplant and then support the process with PRP therapy.
Since this therapy involves injecting your own blood into your scalp, there is no risk of contracting an infectious disease. However, the healthcare professional administering PRP should be careful to avoid damaging blood vessels or nerves, scar tissue, and calcifications at the injection sites. Therefore, the procedure should be performed in a hospital setting by qualified healthcare professionals.
